What do you want to achieve in your career? In your industry? In the world?

Courageous leaders develop a clear vision of what they want to accomplish—and put together a plan of attack to do it. But this doesn't mean they have everything figured out from the start—in fact, part of being an audacious leader is being comfortable with uncertainty and embracing the unknown. But, top leaders generally have an idea of the general steps to achieve their goals and what roadblocks they might encounter along the way, and how to bring other people on board with their vision.

02—Resilient in the face of setbacks.

No matter how well you plan or how much experience you have, at some point, all leaders encounter setbacks. That's just part of life (and leadership). The important thing is how those in charge handle these obstacles when they occur.

Do they give up at the first sign of trouble? Or do they dust themselves off and keep going?

Audacious leaders are resilient—they don't let failure define them or hold them back from achieving their goals. One of the most recognized positive leadership qualities of successful leaders is the ability to learn from their mistakes and adapt quickly.

LEGO—Building toys and resiliency

Lego CEO Jørgen Vig Knudstorp is a great example of an audacious leader who delivered a classic turnaround story. Lego struggled for nearly a decade when Knudstrop was named CEO in 2004. Things were pretty bleak at the toy company. Sales were in decline, debt was increasing, and profitability was dismal.

But Knudstrop's positive leadership qualities were evident—he had the vision to turn the company around and strengthen its credibility. Rather than focusing on short-term profits or giving up in the face of adversity, Knudstrop set broad goals for Lego. He implemented a strategy for niche differentiation, restructured the management team to encourage fresh ideas, invested heavily in lucrative brand partnerships, and focused on delivering high-quality products.

Despite numerous difficulties, Knudstrop took the company back to its roots—making toys that kids and parents both loved—and grew it into a multibillion-dollar business. This includes toys, Legoland theme parks (eight of them worldwide, and counting), and the popular Lego movie franchise. This success has lead Lego to become one of the most iconic brands, with products sold worldwide.

03—Take calculated risks...with a clear strategy.

Of course, no goal worth achieving comes without risk. But audacious leaders approach ventures with caution and thoughtfulness. This requires a clear strategy and a willingness to learn and adapt as the situation unfolds. While it may be easier to stick with the "safe" path, great leaders know that taking calculated risks is often the key to success.

For example, when Jacinda Ardern became Prime Minister of New Zealand in 2017, she was the world's youngest female head of government. Despite her youth, she had inspiring positive leadership qualities—she had a clear vision for the country, communicated well with constituents and other leaders, and was willing to make tough decisions when necessary. This included initiatives to protect citizens, such as closing the country's borders during the COVID-19 pandemic and banning assault-style weapons. Her strategies paid off, and she was rewarded with a resounding electoral victory because of her leadership and worldwide recognition.

Without risk, there is no progress or innovation. And for leaders to truly make a positive impact, they need to be willing to press forward with vision and strategy.

04—Showcase authenticity and integrity.

Being an audacious leader is about so much more than just achieving great things. It's also about living your values and being true to yourself. Motivating leaders have strong moral principles that guide their actions and decisions, and they stand up for what they believe in, even when it means going against the status quo.

Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, is an excellent example of an inspiring leader who exudes authenticity and integrity. He has been outspoken in his advocacy for LGBTQ rights and environmental sustainability and has used his position to promote and defend these causes. Cook's commitment to sustainable business practices is a crucial reason for Apple's decision to add 25 suppliers to the 70 it's already helping transition to 100% renewable energy. Under Cook, Apple's goal is to have the entire supply chain and product usage to be carbon neutral within a decade. Whether you agree with Cook or not, it's clear that he stands up for his values and purpose—and that's a true mark of an audacious leader.

05—Has emotional intelligence and empathy.

Courageous leaders understand that positive actions begin with positive intentions. That's why emotional intelligence and empathy are so important to their leadership style. They're in tune with the emotions of others, and they know how to respond accordingly. Whether it's listening carefully, offering support when needed, or giving useful feedback, courageous leaders know how to respond in a way that inspires positive action and growth.

Dallas Mavericks CEO goes all in on DEI

In 2018, the Dallas Mavericks faced allegations of a toxic work environment, with several former employees accusing members of the leadership of sexual misconduct. Rather than brushing the allegations aside or trying to hide them, the Mavericks realized their company culture needed to evolve. They brought in Cynthia Marshall, the first black female CEO in the NBA's history, to lead that change.

Marshall's vision was to create an inclusive workplace where every voice matters, everyone belongs, and success is achieved through positive collaboration. At the heart of this goal is getting to know the people of the Dallas Mavericks. To quote Marshall, "And so my job is to really know these people. Love them as people first, employees second."

She dove deep into understanding the Mavericks' employees and culture, listening to all feedback with an open mind. Through this approach, Marshall has rebuilt trust and positive relationships across the organization. Her efforts paid off, with the Mavericks being awarded the NBA's Diversity Inclusion Award.
